ENGLISH BELOW

Our third return to Orchid Island, partnering with our woodcraft teacher Liao ChunIan (與木.生活.家)  from PingTung to kick off Jia-Xin’s Toys for Taiwan!

This was one of the first woodcraft workshops where we had to be responsible for supplying the materials, a lesson in itself as we spent weeks trying to grasp the terminology and differences between types of wood.

We take feedback and learned during our last trip to Lanyu the women signaled an interest in woodwork; and we also hoped that they could create frames for their own art which would be so much more empowering. Fortunately we had a craftsman contact us and in the weeks leading up to the date, worked to piece together this special workshop. We had to ship almost 200KG worth of wood and materials to the island in advance, crossing our fingers

The 30 spots available for signup quickly filled up and after a long travel day, we arrived at Lanyu to make sure all the materials we sent arrived. We settled down at night unpacking the fresh fruits and plant-based foodstuffs we had brought – Bright Side Projects is Taiwan’s first non profit association to concurrently promote empowerment through creation and plantbased foods through content rich activities. With most restaurants closed during low season in addition to the high cost of meals on Lanyu, we cook and provide plant-based meals for our Big Friends in addition our workshops.

That morning we got off to a later start than anticipated but everyone was very eager to listen and learn the fundamentals of woodcraft starting off with sketching and measuring. They could select one of three types of wooden frames to make. By the end, with all the sawing and sanding, most went past the time limit and stayed well ‘after class’ but completed frames that were amazing. For all the sweat and tears, it was completely worthwhile! It was also a treat to see people using the frames immediately after the workshop in their homes or market stalls!

Lunch break consisted of fresh fruits and coconut chia pudding sponsored by our good friends RUNIVORE. Many have never had coconut chia pudding before and became fans of the treat – something we’ll be sure to bring back our next trip in April.

This workshop was our first time to utilize our blackboard paint wooden name tags in an effort to cut down on the waste of sticker labels. There is room for improvement but we look forward to the challenge.

First Day English)
Toys for Taiwan!
English Below

Day two of workshops in Lanyu thanks to our PingTung woodcraft Teacher Liao ChunIan
與木.生活.家 and Jia-Xin’s Toys for Taiwan! Read about day one here!

Since the sheer logistics of getting a solid team and the cost to Lanyu continues to be daunting, we try to pack as many quality activities as we can for the community. Bright Side Projects is so grateful for the passionate people that take time off work and projects to make this weeklong journey that is mostly all work and very little leisure time as our meetings and preparation often wrap up late into the night.

Our second day focused on the kids and our Teacher had something very special in mind. The woodcraft workshop proved to be a huge challenge with the sawing the hammering. The skill and time involved was on a more difficult level than any of our previous activities in the past few years but what we learned was to stick with it and never underestimate children. If you provide an activity that is well crafted and keeps up the engagement with them, kids will not quit!

It’s very rare that a teacher did not show kids beforehand the end product of their creation but we found this led to great anticipation. By the end of a long day, with many parents becoming Big Friends alongside kids, the wooden lanterns with intricate designs kids sawed in themselves emerged in the Lanyu twilight. Our teacher ended his second straight day of workshops with a smile on his face and endless patience for us and all his students. He found such joy in being able to share this skill with others!

Some of the kids we’ve been fortunate enough to see for the third time since we had our workshops here in the beginning – there were also many new faces as the event was hosted in LanDao. On our way back to our hostel, we soon came across a lantern created by a kid lighting up the patio of their home! We hope to have support for more workshops so all can be empowered to learn new skills.

ENG BELOW

This was a really special day as it was our first time to head to MiaoLi’s Yu-An Children’s Home for kids and adults with special needs! Being able to continue with Jia-Xin’s journey to the western seaboard of Taiwan this time around was a great adventure!

The staff took us on a tour of the amazing Japanese-constructed center complete with a slide from the fourth floor down to the ground level. The rays of the sunlight danced into each of the rooms, providing a cozy haven for the residents. The residents  have their own chores and also create many items such as soap and baked goods for charity sales. Our team of Big Friends began to set up in the activities room after the tour with some organic local flour thanks to Buy Direct from Farmer’s [White Dolphin All Purpose Flour] and all the assortment needed to make vegan gingerbread from scratch. It was just two days prior we spent several hours at Paula Perry’s house learning how to make these cookies and were so excited to share this with kids at Yu-An Home.

Every one of the student that day was completely dedicated from creating black sugar syrup, weighing dry ingredients, mixing in wet ingredients, and the patience while the cookies baked to get icing ready. There was a lot of excitement and we are happy to include Yu-An as part of the Bright Side Projects neighborhood for 2017, next time making volcanoes!

ENG BELOW

We wrapped up the Jia-XIn solstice activities where we first began it in 2012 – in ChingChuan. It’s amazing the different faces we’ve seen now that it’s our fifth year here.

Five years ago we made plant-based chocolate cupcakes with Paula and we are back again creating vegan gingerbread cookies with Joanna and Rhea. The faces of the children are all different but the warmth radiating from their smiles and infectious laughter was the same!
We were so lucky to have three new friends make the journey this time, one of them our Secret Santa. As the kids and Big Friends, measured organic flour and ingredients, prepped the dough, decided on the shape of their gingerbread cookies, it seemed important that in a world that’s so divided today strangers of different backgrounds could enjoy each other company to learn and create something – together.

While we were treated to the wonderful scents of the cookies baking, we enjoyed a delicious plant-based  lunch of OOCH’s Roasted Veggie Curry paired with organic local rice from HFH. Despite the light rain, kids took Big Friends on a walk introducing their neighborhood and TaoShan Elementary School. The last half of the day Rhea lead us on a mini course about understanding animal welfare in Taiwan and how to approach doggies.
Big Friends and Kids had options of the types of puppy chew toys gifts they would make and donate to stray animals that are currently under the care of Mary’s Doggies. The funnest part of the day came during our “quality control” testing with kids making sure the toys would stand the test of time and canine teeth. After many “tests” of tug-of-war, these toys are verified “Kid-Made, Kid-Tested, and Kid-Approved”!

The cookies came fresh out of the oven and after cooling could be decorated as the creators saw fit. Many opted to enjoy one during the workshop and were able to bring back the remainder to share with their family and friends. What an amazing day and a great start to start the year!

It always makes me think when i come across people who believe interaction with children should simply comprise of sufficient education to take pass exams and basic food necessities – with no stress on the quality of either.  What is left out is the nurturance of the soul and the importance of the community.

I hope that we can all continue on this journey together and look forward to seeing you at Bright Side Projects in 2017! Our plant-based lunch today was sponsored by Ooh Cha Cha, HuaLien Friendly Farm, and Buy Direct From Farmers!

Bright Side activities not only strive to bring a new experience to kids and engagement between people but also focus on issues such as environmentalism, animal welfare, diversity, and tolerance. It provides a plant-based hot meal and a few hours reprieve where people learn and create smiles on each others faces. We can be compassionate towards people we just met and we can support each other. This needs to be a long term commitment.

Only through your support can we continue to move forward, please consider donating to Bright Side Projects. Your generous support of just $500 NT a month provides a hot plant-based meal for child, $1000 NT goes to funding an educational creative workshop that nurtures the mind and soul.

Between our October and January workshop, we felt we would miss the kids of ChingChuan if we did not see them! Because of our annual year end Santa Jia-Xin activities, we had to focus a lot of time on fundraising and venturing to different areas for our gift creation workshops. So before December madness and after our woodcraft workshops in Orchid Island, we wanted to have to share a plant-based brunch with kids, simply to connect with them.

Initially we planned to cook “for” the kids – but this was impossible. Kids were eager to join and get involved as they always have during our workshops! A delicious plant-based lunch of waffles (waffle maker thanks to Kelly Lin) and carrot cake pancakes were slowly created while the sweet potato/potato/veggie tray grilled in the oven. Kids had a wonderful time getting the salts and olive oil into the veggie tray – it was our first time to give this recipe a go and it did not disappoint! RUNIVORE Chia Seed coconut milk pudding with fresh fruit was the dessert of the day.

The best part of the day was being able to play with the kids. We did not have many Big Friends attend so there were about 3-4 kids for each Big Friend. For many faces it was their first Bright Side workshop. Some were shy to register so directly came to the venue and peered in. We were more than happy to share in the creation process and the vegan meal with them and also some guardians. Always eager for a chance to bond with the community. The day ended with cleaning and about 2 hours of playing and chatting with these newcomers who we hope to see again in March for our metalsmith workshop! So fortunate to find new exciting teachers to showcase new skills and tools of creation for the children to open new doors and opportunities!

ENG BELOW

We don’t get the chance to head down to Taitung as often as we’d like to so hope that each time we are there for the kids of ShinMaLan we are able to learn not only enrich our knowledge but also how to benefit others.

The workshop sponsored by JX and sponsors focused on upcycling denim jeans, fabric, and yarns. Every Bright Side class we focus on education sharing knowledge on a social awareness issue and upcycling materials or using what we already have on hand whenever possible. This time we brought in environmental consciousness and animal welfare by giving discarded clothing another life and also learned how to make doggy chew toys out of them!

Teacher Rhea gave a short background on the current situation of stray dogs in Taiwan and we proceeded to upcycle the colorful materials. Thanks to the knotting skills of Teacher James and Rhea these chew toys made by kids would be donated to bring joy to the strays at Mary’s Doggies.

After a hearty diverse and rainbow sweet potato curry plant-based lunch paired with donated organic rice, each child was asked about their dream and the colors they felt represented it. Kids got used paper bowls we collected from an elementary school (yes the ones people use for takeouts) and we cut off the rim to use as the frame for dreamcatchers and used the remainder of the bowl to put scrap in.

The task of looping the yarn around got off to a rocky start but after a few minute, even the youngest children thanks to patience and hands on assistance from Big Friends, were able to proudly complete their own dreamcatchers. Much like Jia-Xin had a dream to spread generosity and year end warmth to kids around Taiwan, Bright Side wants to be here for all youth and adults to empowering them to realize their dream. We all come different background and have different dreams but we must learn to tolerate and accept each others paths in lives.

The afternoon ended with a messy but fun vegan gingerbread decorating session and a recap of the lessons learned we learned from the entire day. We are expanding to other parts of Taiwan and aim for long term involvement in communities, especially in our outreach to Taitung. If you are located in Southern Taiwan, we hope you can join us next time! If you want to sponsor our educational workshops, please contact us so we can keep looking towards the Bright Side with kids and grow alongside them!

Trekking over from Taipei to Hualien and then onto LuYe, we were excited to host our first edu-workshop for the indigenous Puyuma kids of the LongGuoMai community. (ENG BELOW)

We were told the children hear have very limited access and resource to programs such as art and music. We were completely thrilled to be able to share one of our favorite workshops featured art but also permitted kids to dabble in a bit of science!

Af
ter a long car drive through winding mountain roads, we finally reached the community center and began to unpack and set up all the materials. We prepped the clay out of expired donated flour and started to cut fresh fruit for the hot chocolate fondue (kids afternoon snack).

Rhea started with explaining some of the basics of geography and understanding the basics of volcanoes before we began to mold and build them in groups. Kids painted scenery and added glitter. While we waited they enjoyed fresh fruit kabobs as their afternoon snack! Heading back to the completed volcanoes, we conducted trial/error experiments with ingredients and then finally reached the highlight of the day – erupting volcanoes! The kids reactions were priceless!

Although we had very scarce resources, by having our new Big Friend Jimmy joined our adventure along with of our wonderful Tainan-based Photographer Ken, everyone had a great time. We are so blessed to have been able to meet the children and share in this learning experience.

Jimmy shares with his first-time experience creating with kids and also his first time volunteering with Bright Side Projects.

“This is the first time for me to volunteer and tagged along with Bright Side Projects on a four day journey from Taipei to Taitung. We first stopped in Hualien, volunteered to clear out weeds, snails, and insect eggs in rice paddies, experiencing just a sliver of the challenges that local organic farmers face. We then continued down to Taitung and LongGuoMai, to create volcanoes with kids! Being able to be a part of this, from being assigned a tasks and then being able to complete this in a group, was very rewarding.

Every child in my group brought in a little of their every day lives into the creation of the volcano, for example painting a fish that represented one of their baseball teammates! The moment that is most engrained in my memory of the day was during our rest and afternoon snack time. Everyone was lining up for the chocolate fondue, one of the teachers noticed I hadn’t had anything to eat yet and immediately one of the kids from my group grabbed a fruit kabob to feed me, shoving it into my mouth. Such a small act made such a big difference and impact on me, this small exchange being the one I won’t forget and will keep in my memory!”

Thank you to Sister Cheng Hui Jing,  Eliza and Taiwan Vineyard for the invitation and their organization. We know that by learning together with the kids, a positive impact will be made on their lives.

After a successful series of woodcraft workshops, we were excited to have metalsmith teacher Emma Yi-Ting Liao contact us with an interest to share and create with kids! (ENG BELOW)

After a successful series of woodcraft workshops, we were excited to have metalsmith teacher Emma Yi-Ting Liao contact us with an interest to share and create with kids! Since this was our first time collaborating on such a newly skilled activity, we started early and began calling out for materials we could borrow or re-use to make the workshop as environmentally friendly as possible. We were so fortunate for the kindness of Emma’s classmates that provided materials to us.

As we started the workshop, more kids who did not register in advance showed up due to the intriguing subject. Although we had limited materials and helping hands, we chose to not turn the children away but hope we have more opportunities in the future to have continued metalsmith workshops. A hardworking morning consisted of discussion, sketching, drawing, and sawing. We challenged the children to put more effort into the design of their metal-art with the question of “If I were a robot…” Through this mini-role play, Big Friends could get to know the kids and their dream super strength.

Our plant-based lunch was fit for royalty – preparations began the night before in the Chou household with cibatta sandwich fillings of tomatoes, cole slaw, and amazing BBQ “pulled pork” mushrooms. Locally sourced organic kale packed full of nutrients also a delicious part of the meal. Combined with homemade pumpkin soup, sweet potatoes and veggies baked in olive oil, and the fan favorite fruit salad, Bright Side Projects provides a comprehensive workshop and well-balanced meal for everyone who joins.

Before kids started up on activities again they took new Big Friends and the teachers to their school and introduced their Neighborhood. With continued sawing, hammering, and shooting animated film with the mini-me robots, the day ended on a high note. The weeks of planning and communication was worth it to see the smile on the children’s faces and their hands being able to create something they never tried before.

We need your support to continue to bring workshops such as these to communities in Taiwan. Please help us at http://brightside.tw/donate/

Norika is a Taiwanese born long term resident of Japan with a six year old child. She has been practicing yoga for over a decade and believes that through practicing yoga, meditation, and deep breathing, one can achieve balance of the body, heart and soul. Another integral factor to achieving this balance also comes through proper nutrition which fuels the energy for our body and in turn our souls.

Norika places emphasis on a child’s nutrition that affects their thinking and behavior patterns and promotes their well-being in naturally combining and fusing yoga and a proper diet.

“The children are so dedicated and have such a passion to learn, however, I could feel that in their hearts they also really want someone to be by their side”

Chelsea Huang / -First Time Big Friend Chelsea Huang

“This is my first time to join an event and realized that I could just be my regular self with the children, there was no need to act or pretend to be any different. My boyfriend who joined me that day was at first hesitant against joining the workshop but after today said he was open to coming back!”

Meg Lien / – First Time Big Friend Meg Lien

I really liked that in each edu-course, there’s an aspect of teaching the kids something new, it’s really fantastic!”

Jerry Liu / – Bright Side Projects Board of Director / Big Friend – Jerry Liu

We are so honored that Teacher Paula made time for us so that kids could learn how to make colorful pinatas again! Before the class began, we had a presentation to show the kids that explained the actual origins of the holiday that is celebrated called “Cinco de Mayo” and how it became to be only popular in the United States and not in Mexico. Capitalism, commodification, commercialization, and the effects of caricaturization were explored with the children.

We began the numerous steps to pinata creation, getting the kids to sketch and then pick out recycled cardboard with their Big Friends, cutting and then the tedious task of papering. At lunch break we enjoyed a delicious plant-based meal hand-made by Sophie sponsored by her Mexican restaurant Teotihuacán. Kids had the opportunity to create guacamole and listened very intently, assisting through all the cutting and chopping of ingredients.

Stunning photos of the kids and their pinata masterpieces were taking with the backdrop artwork courtesy of Edney Yang. There were many memorable moments throughout the day but of course, the highlight was taking their turn with the baseball bat on the summery watermelon pinata created by Teacher Paula and Teacher Assistant Sarah.

Instead of simply stuffing it with only plastic wrapped candies, we decided to go more environmentally friendly and fun by using our excess cardboard pieces with numbers written on it. Each number represented something – from a vegan chocolate chip cupcake, or an activity such as leap frog, dance, or song, the kid would have to perform. Was a wonderful way to end the day burning energy and with laughter.

Through food and creation in our unique edu-course, it was a fun and interactive way for us to bring a slice of a foreign culture that kids might not have had the chance to learn about or experience. We hope to be able to bring more activities and diverse opportunities to kids so please support us!

With the pressure of upcoming exams, we were pleasantly surprised and honored that our workshop at FUKID was so popular, filling up fast with several names on the waitlist. Teacher Kuo told us that ever since we first visited in 2013, Bright Side activities are increasingly popular with the children in the area. (ENG BELOW)

Who doesn’t love the thought of creating mini exploding volcanoes? This Mad Scientist edu-course is one of Bright Side Projects core workshops that masterfully combines environmentalism, geography, art, chemistry, and film-making into an non-stop exciting day. From using expired flour and tossed away cardboard boxes, kids made volcanoes from scratch and painted the backdrop to set up for a fun science experiment. During the clay making with flour, choruses of kids laughing and exclaiming “this is so fun!” could be heard through the hallway!

For lunch, Teacher Rhea tried their hand at pesto risotto which turned out absolutely delicious! Perfectly paired with the ever popular fruit salad. The children who arrived early helped with the cutting of the fruit and during our rest break at lunchtime we encountered our touching Bright Moment of the Day.

One of the adorable kids, who has always been very energetic and playful jumping round during activities, took it upon himself to feed a younger child one spoonful at a time. His first trial was an aggressive approach to force a spoonful of risotto into the child’s mouth but soon changed his tune, coaxing the child to finish his meal using a softer tone. He was so pleased with his success he looked around to see who else was not finished and ran over to “help” out.  We hope that workshops can continue to not only bring education and knowledge, but also be a safe spaces setting up these moments of compassion and interaction, encourage kids to be kind and caring.

As much as we love heading to Taitung, the resources in both fund and time is a heavy toll for Bright Side Projects. We would love to have more Big Friends join us who are based in Taitung or Southern Taiwan. We are always on the lookout for Big Friends who have skills and knowledge to share as teachers – please contact us!
