This time Teacher Iven Di and Haichen Hsu bring the deliciousness of a plant-based lunch to Orchid Island! After several failed attempts due to weather to get to the island from Taipei City, some of our Big Friends were finally able to share some these wonderful recipes with the indigenous Tao women and continue our friendship with them! We include tofu scramble (thanks Paula Perry), coconut Runivore chia fruit salad, and omega-3 rich flax seed carrot cake pancakes.

A new season and another trip to Orchid Island! With the unpredictable weather in Taiwan, we had some massive delays on transportation and also the issues of our scarce resources being able to reach the island off the southeast shores of the mainland to spend time with the indigenous Tao children. However, once we were there and began sharing the craft of metalsmith (which we just learned from our artisan in Taichung) and plant-based pancakes, the beaming faces of the children reminded us to be grateful for this opportunity. Kids learned the basics foundations in designing, sawing, hammering, and creating their own robot charms. Skilled craft workshops and teachers are hard to come by especially in remote areas.

We were very fortunate to have volunteers from the Tao Foundation join us today, as well as the generosity of A-Po providing a wonderful space for us to learn and interact. Thank you to the amazing Bright Side Projects Team for making this journey. Please continue to support us!

It’s always a treat to see the familiar faces of the youth in Taitung and having picked up some beginner metalsmith skills to share with the kids was as fun for them as it was for us! (ENGLISH BELOW)

We were on edge hoping that our boxes of materials arrived back from Lanyu in time for the workshop in ShinMaLan. Just a few days before, our team headed over to Lanyu sharing this exciting workshop and came back down from Taipei again.

There were many steps involved in the entire process which we painstakingly detailed out so that our new Big Friends would be able to lead the children on this edu-course.

As usual, the workshop filled up quickly and we were very fortunate to have some of the youth help out with assisting the younger kids with the task at hand, creating cool charms out of metal scraps.

Kids were able to get a fundamental understanding on tool safety and usage through incorporation of art and design. Lunch served was vegan breakfast burritos – tumeric tofu scramble, kid-made guacamole, potatoes and yams. We cooled down with fresh watermelon juice.

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it but it’s the first time for us to slice a watermelon – luckily it was for a blender so even if it wasn’t the prettiest slices it was a good enough job! This unique crafts workshop could not have been conducted without your support! SUPPORT US! http://brightside.tw/donate/

Ever since first coming over in January this year thanks to Jia-Xin’s Toys For Taiwan, we have been forward to seeing the kids again at this shelter based in MiaoLi, providing resources for special needs youth and adults. We utilized expired flour letting the children and Big Friends create clay from scratch to create and mold into volcanoes. Upcycled cardboard boxes served as the backdrop for kids to paint on. It was heartwarming to see the interaction between the kids and some of our Big Friends on their first trip here (Grace Hsu) and also Luke Tsai’s first time volunteering with us! Luke also kindly prepped a veganized version of his famous curry rice for lunch. We hope that many more people can join us in MiaoLi for our future classes here as well!

{每個喜歡畫畫的孩子,都需要一雙懂得欣賞的眼睛。}

Kao Hsuan was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1990. She graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 2013. Ideas for her works are often derived from experiences, senses, and perceptions in life, and are ways to examining mundane details in everyday encounters. She often utilizes methods of painting, video, sculpture, and installation to document and transform snippets of her life, tearing tenuous moments down and reconstructing them into poetic, diligent forms. Kao’s works before 2013 are primarily two-dimensional: The lateral woman, Ideology, Untitled, and vaginal are all pieces reflecting her own bodily states. In 2014, Kao began a long-term project titled Dictionary date- A to Z. It is an ongoing project containing poems written for herself. Disguised in English alphabets and sketches that house fragments (scenes) of her consciousness, everyday experiences are made into a journal of inspiration to document the artist’s self. There is no longer a specific way of making anymore.

We were so excited to welcome Teacher Norika to ChingChuan! We gave the kids and Big Friends plenty of time to make their delicious sushi and rice balls, pushing them to be more creative in coming up with unique themes and stories when they made their sushi. (English below)

Teacher Norika gave us a short history lesson on the origins of the Japanese cuisine and set the kids off on an adventure to masterfully cut and mold out shapes. Each “team” prepared took time to beautifully plate their masterpieces for a lunch that was a feast for the stomache as well as the eyes!

Kids took Big Friends over to the school and we settled down to begin our yoga session at TaoShan Elementary School. Teacher Norika was especially mindful of ensuring that Big Friends and kids could work together on the poses to enhance interaction and understand the strength of our bodies. We ended with building trust dabbling with acro-yoga which the kids absolutely loved. The backdrop of Wufeng was spectacular.

Our events are always packed – Nagashi-somen served as the finale for this perfect day. We had a volunteer drive out to Taoyuan to pick up the large bamboo two weeks prior and Rhea’s father took the time and dedication to saw it in half at home! The first thing our Big Friends did this morning was to clean it and get the water ready for the flowing noodle event in the afternoon.

Getting everyone involved in either holding the bamboo, pouring water, cooking noodles or getting ready to grab the noodles with chopsticks, this was a traditional Japanese summer activity that is definitely not to be missed! Thank you all for your support so that we can experience this together and kids and adults alike can experience such a wide array of cultures and activities to brighten their day!

Campaign Period: 2017 9/17-2017 10/1
Approximately 30 children, ages 7-18.
https://goo.gl/maps/2d2y32Pg5gD2

WHO ARE THE CHILDREN

Tsu Kuang is a children’s home based in Taichung city providing services for orphans and neglected children the ages of 3 and above. This time we will be working with the younger children in the home.

WHAT ARE OUR HOPES FOR THEM?

Our hopes remain consistent with our mission – getting the community involved to empower children, this time through art.

If we are able to achieve our fundraising goals, we would like to have the children not only be involved in the artistic creation and planning, but also other areas such as understanding photography, videography, editing, writing reports, and laying out a sample booklet or website dedicated to this projects. No experience is one-dimensional and learning should not be either!

About 2017 BUILD A HOME

We are so excited to continue our BUILD A HOME for 2017! Please help us raise $100,000 NT by September 20th to make this dream for the children of Tsu Kuang Children’s Home( $3,200 USD) translate into their reality! This includes material, freshly prepped plant-based meals, transportation, accommodation, and more! If you happen to have a vehicle we can utilize for transportation or can sponsor us in rental, please contact us immediately.

What will be even more astonishing and meaningful this time is that we will also involve youth we’ve worked with across the country to assist us with the project implementation. Some we’ve known since 2012 or 2013, through Face of the Youth, will now be able to continue to give back to the community that they are also a part of! We hope that we can support them this time and in all future endeavors.

目標 Purpose: Empower the children of Tsu Kuang Children’s Home through art
Campaign Period: 2017 9/17-2017 10/1

BACKGROUND

Taking cue from our successful BUILD A HOME project in 2014 (Taoyuan MuHsiang Children’s Home) we have been invited to co-host Taichung’s Tsu Kuang Children’s Home in the creation of a large 1.5-2 story tall mural for the children and by the children who live there! We have searched for many weeks before finally coming across the perfect artist.

Before we start the mural with A MONSTER A DAY art collective we will be hosting a workshop hosted by Teacher Kao Hsuan and Little Kingdom with kids who live at the home, so that kids have a say in what they want. We try in every way we can to empower children by giving them a voice and involving them throughout the process. We need your support to get us the finish line!

Very fortunate to have A Monster A Day provide this for us and Teacher Kao Hsuan (thanks to Little Kingdom) on this amazing journey with us. Bright Side Projects is a proponent of diversity promoting creation, love, gender fluidity, environmental consciousness, and awareness of social issues.

2017 BUILD A HOME Activities

In addition to the working sessions from 9/22 to 10/1 (TBC), we will host

What is Required:
1) Signed Agreement form including usage of artist and artist work images in video and photography
2) Full collaboration with the children on conception, creation, and execution of the final piece.
3) Workshop with children prior to the creation
4) Meeting with Children’s Home prior
5) Draft approval by Children’s Home
6) Material List Budget approval by Children’s Home

As per Bright Side Projects Manifesto, we encourage artwork to challenge and dispel gender norms and stereotypes. Workshop planned for brainstorming session should promote creativity in the sense is to have both children and adult to try something new or refine a vision with better understanding. Copyrighted artwork will not be permitted.

** Remainder of funds will continue to go towards Bright Side Projects long term commitment in these communities.

One of the most well known phrases is “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.”

Right now we live our lives day to day plagued by pressure and a sense of helplessness – A Monster A Day brings to our lives monsters that relieve the stress and send these negative emotions away! The artistic group was set up in 2012, hoping that through the healing process of painting and art on a daily basis, the monsters can bring up on a positive mental outlook on life and bring comfort and invoke happy moods around the world.

A Monster A Day has worked with a variety of partners from Taipei Contemporary Art Center, Nike, Ogilvy & Mather, Nike, Hi Interactive, Volkswagen, China Times, Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, and more!

Kao Hsuan

交通 Transportation – $17,500 ~ $20,000

People like the idea of convenience – but getting items to where those who may benefit from the resources is not always about that. Our core group is based in Taipei and we have on-site locals in each of the locations. But with many of our talents and resources prepped at our base, we need to sort and get them out.

Our core group is based in Taipei and we have on-site locals in each of the locations. But with many of our talents and resources prepped at our base, we need to sort and get them out.

From Taipei to Taichung: by public transport 2-3 hours each way via bus or train / by personal vehicle 2.5 hours each way.

Since April, the staff no longer has use of a private vehicle. This has been a huge strain for us in terms of logistics and extra expenditure. Renting a vehicle will cost approximately $1,500 per day, not inclusive of collecting the vehicle, extra fees, taxes, and gasoline thus approximately $1,800-$2,300 per day. We have also been quoted the generous offer of $30,000 for a one month rental.

Buses and trains will cost approximately $800 roundtrip while the HSR at a hour is $1,400 per person. Both will require additional funds to take the taxi to Tsu Hsin Children’s Home. We do have a lot of equipment to take with us to most workshops so logistically having storage space in a car is ideal.

Note that many of these participants are not paid for and volunteering on their own time.

Bright Side Projects Team

Our core group that will be heading to Taichung include Daisy Lin, Rhea Chou, Haichen Hsu, Starry Cheng, Ken Wang. Another wonderful day with the kids at MiaoLi’s Yu An Halfway Home, providing services for disabled youth and adults. We hope that we can get more Big Friend volunteers to come with us as we only had three people this time so only able to host a mini but delicious workshop. We want to be able to keep coming back here and getting to know the kids and interact with them, if you missed out on the delicious vegan carrot cake pancakes this time, keep posted on our site so you don’t miss out on our next trip in November!

Daisy:

Mad Scientist II Volcanic Eruption!

NEIGHBORHOOD INTERVIEW|JIACHI SU

It has been an amazing journey in Bright Side Projects and JiaChi has been a huge part of it since 2012. So many of our beautiful memories have not only been captured by her but created by her. Her wonderful smile, gorgeous soul, and warm glow radiates the very persona of what Bright Side Projects and our Big Friends are about.

Daisy: How and when did you find out about Bright Side Projects and what made you want to get involved?
JiaChi Su: It started in 2012 when my co-worker first joined in Bright Side Projects and invited me to come along with her on their next event. Because I was curious about how an art course would incorporate an interactive aspect between kids and adults, I signed up.

D: Since you have joined the workshops for the past five years, how do you feel this long term relationship is different than other volunteer groups?

J: Through long term involvement with the kids, you can better understand their personality and also how it changes. Through long term involvement with the kids, can better understand their personality ad changes and also how to interaction with them and how to capture their attention on things they are interested in. Understanding them more and having spent time with them, they are more willing to open up to you.

D: What are your favorite classes that you’ve participated in with Bright Side Projects?
J: I loved the Artistic Expression Through Motion workshop, allowing kids to feel the environment and knowing their bodies through art creating a dance. This was very touching to see that moment.

Mad Scientist II Volcanic Eruption! was memorable as kids not only created their own volcanoes, but grabbed dinosaurs and created a story from it. Being able to listen to their stories was adorable. Metalsmith & MiniMe Robworkshop with kids creating their own mini me robots took place just last year and seeing the patience and dedication of the kids was mesmerizing!

D: What types of moments are the ones that make you want to take up the camera and snap?
J: My favorite shots are when kids are listening intently and the enthusiasm they have during the class. And I also love the interaction between the kids and Big Friends.

D: Why do you continue to join in Bright Side Project activities?
J: Because the people involved are wonderful! Thank you to Bright Side Projects for providing this opportunity to be alongside the kids as they grow! While we are navigating through the courses together, their imagination takes me on a journey that is an alternate source of true healing.

D: What are your hopes for the children or what you can do?
J: I hope that a seed is planted in the children’s hearts and minds, that the world has endless possibilities and choices outside of traditional routes and mainstream values.

We look forward to you also joining the Neighborhood and our community!

Daisy:

Interview|James Teng

Artist, teacher, apparel and accessories designer, yogi, chef, photographer, illustrator, production manager, intellectual – James is everything! We have been so lucky to have met this Renaissance extraordinaire at the beginning of our inception at Bright Side Projects. From Tainan to Orchid Island and Build a Home at Taoyuan, James has taken on many hats and aided the association in multiple creative directions, enriching the content of our edu-workshops and the lives of the children. We are grateful for his friendship and his Virgo-esque quirks at Bright Side!

Daisy: How and when did you find out about Bright Side Projects and what made you want to get involved?
James: In the late summer of 2012 I joined Bright Side Projects not just as a Big Friend but designed a course integrating art with body movement and dance. At that time I had just returned from living in Europe for six years and was “new” to Taiwan and curious about changes and also the indigenous culture, which I have never had contact with. Hearing about Bright Side Project’s program, I immediately decided to join.

D: Since you have joined the workshops for the past five years, how do you feel this long term relationship is different than other volunteer groups?
J: The last time I was in ChingChuan it all seemed the same – the homes, the mountains, basically the facade. However, the children have all grown up. The kids I once knew have all left perhaps to further their education elsewhere. That day we made sushi, ate sushi, did yoga, introduced “nagashi somen” or flowing noodles, and heard the news that back in Taipei city it was raining hard while the sun was out where we were. Halfway through the class Jr Lung, now grown up, suddenly appeared. He said nothing and did not want to get too close to the venue. However, despite this, he remembered each and every person who had come to ChingChuan before. We stayed under the same awning for ten minutes not saying a word. When I went to refill my bowl of soup he had disappeared. In just a flash, the children become teenagers, the teenagers leave these nestled mountains and I wonder if they will remember this day where we were together making sushi, eating sushi, partnering for yoga at the schoolyard, using chopsticks to capture the noodles.

D: In Bright Side, what are the moments that stand out to you?
J: In those perfectly composed moment, interluded by the shrill shriek and laughter of a child and their running feet. Perhaps it’s the sparkle that shines from the wide-eyed expression of the child, maybe it’s the distance of the mountains, or its the lingering shadows of the children as they run in a line over the suspension draw bridge.

D: Why do you continue to join in Bright Side Projects workshops?
J:
The first time I went up to the mountains and met the kids of ChingChuan was also the first time I had interaction with the Atayal tribe. I remember all those years ago the thought on my mind when I went back to the city was that I was not here to teach them – but the children were the ones who have taught me so much just in a day. In their lives there is a sense of purity and straightforwardness, this muddled and unnatural cluttered in comparison to the metropolis jungle. To find footing again and reminder to restart the compass, I continue to join in Bright Side Projects.

D: What are your hopes for the children or what you can do?
J: I only hope that their lives are full of joy and perhaps once in awhile remember the happy moments of the fond times we have spent together.

Brian Lin

In 2006 Brian became mesmerized After first hearing the low frequency sound of the didgeridoo during the performance of Australian Aboriginal musician Mark Atkins. Heading to Australia to learn the instrument, he created his own didgeridoo and was also greatly influenced by the local indigenous music and culture. When Brian returned to Asia he headed out to Japan and often hosts events to share the beautiful sounds of the didgeridoo and hopes to discover the world through diversity of music and instruments.

FB: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Asalato.tw/

Once a DJ, Fuso Chen took interest in traditional African Instrument ASALATO, made out of Oncoba Spinosa shell. Based in Taiwan and lacking access, he first utilized Christmas tree ornaments and soon traveled to Japan to pick up his first set. He now is the founder of the ASALATO group in Taiwan.

Travel/Connection/Music is the trifecta that which nourishes the sound and creation behind Angus’ instrument of choice; the handpan. Having taken up the instrument for three years, in his first year he took time to learn it on his own and by his second year was joining in international music jams. Each time he goes abroad he learns new things, bringing hands pan to Taiwan and hopes to culture the growth of a musical circle domestically. He is the founder of SoulDays Studio.

The Hang / Handpan is a musical instrument created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in Bern, Switzerland. The instrument is constructed from two half-shells of steel sheet glued together at the rim leaving a hollow inside and creating a UFO shape.
